Self Employment Success Stories - Nova Scotia

If jobs grew on trees, we'd probably have more than we can handle. Did you ever wonder if you've simply been looking in the wrong place?

Jobs happen when someone has an idea and a passion, and then goes about making it come true with patience and determination. Here are the stories of three such individuals and their supportive families.

Otis Thomas came to Nova Scotia in the early 70s with his wife Nadene. Friends call her Deanie. They bought a small piece of land on a hillside overlooking St. Ann's Bay. Working at odd jobs, they spent their first Nova Scotia winter in a Teepee, planning the log home they would start to build in the spring. Otis has always had a passion for making musical intruments. This made a small workshop an essential component of their new home. Over the years, Otis has been perfecting his craft, building mandolins, dulcimers, guitars, and finally some of the finest violins to be found anywhere. Read more here!

John Roberts and his partner, Marion Thompson, also came to Nova Scotia in the early 70s. They settled on the North Shore of Cape Breton the first of two log homes. John loves working with leather. Word of his workmanship spread and he was eventually commissioned to supply authentic replicas of leather implements for the restored Fortress of Louisbourg. Using traditional materials and techniques, John initially supplied the leather buckets and the shows (complete with wooden 'nails') for the staff at the Frotress. Read more here!

Norbert Sattler, with his wife Helga and two teenage children, arrived in Nova Scotia in the early 90s. The family settled near Bridgewater on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. Norbert is a master glass painter. In cooperation with the designing artists, he creates stained glass windows for churches and institutional buildings. Another of his specialties is the expert renovation and restoration of older stained glass windows. In moving to Nova Scotia, the Sattler family has managed the successful recreation of their long established German studio with the impressive facility at their new home. Working on international commissions, the Studio Sattler has also been active in Nova Scotia where one of their projects involved the restoration and replacement of all windows at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Lunenburg after the church was destroyed by fire. Visit the website and take a few minutes to treat yourself to the beauty of Norbert's work.
