Champagne Breakfast Anyone?

"A glass of wine, a loaf of bread and thou" - Imagine your best friend in the whole world snuggled up beside you. Outside, the sound of the wind, the pounding surf and the lonely cry of a seagull... it doesn't get much better than this.

Memories are made in Nova Scotia, one of the most romantic spots in the world. Many well-known getaways offer special weekend packages in winter months and year round.

On Valentine's Day, a honeymoon or any time of the year, why not surprise 'your' significant other with a cosy and romantic getaway for just the two of you?

Here are 10 very special Romantic Getaways in Greater Halifax or within a short drive along the coast.

Escape to Greater Halifax

Inn on the Lake
Watch the sunset over the lake from your private balcony, then relax in a jacuzzi for two. The Inn on the Lake in Waverly began life as a roadside motel, but extensive renovations over the years have made it a favourite spot for its fine cuisine and weddings in a luxurious, romantic setting.

Waverly Inn
What could be more romantic than four postered canopies, feather beds and jacuzzis in the haunts of former guests Oscar Wilde, P.T. Barnam and Gloria Vanderbilt? Each 19th century room in the Waverly is restored differently and modestly priced with breakfast included. The Waverly is within walking distance to everything in the downtown/Spring Garden Road area.

Escape to the Coast

Blomidon Inn
There are 26 wonderfully restored rooms in this 19th century captain's mansion in Wolfville, most with jacuzzi, some with that 'must have' fireplace. Just an hour's drive from Halifax, the Blomidon Inn is located on the Bay of Fundy and offers overnight accommodations, a two day Romantic Interlude package and a Three Day Valley Adventure.

DesBarres Manor Inn

Celebrate the most romantic night of the year at one of Nova Scotia's most luxurious inns. Guysborough's historic DesBarres Manor welcomes you to your room for two, with a chilled split of Veuve Clicquot champagne and chocolate dipped strawberries. Then, enjoy a three-course gourmet Valentine's
Dinner by the fireplace. In the morning, wake up to a gourmet
breakfast prepared by Executive Chef Shaun Zwarun. Luxury plus!
(Note: You can add an additional night of romance to the package for only $99. (15th - 17th February 2008). Planning summer? Check out the Beach Blanket Getaway...

Moonlight Beach Inn
If the name of this inn isn't enough, perhaps you'll be enticed by its slogan, "the closest you can get to a bed on the beach". The Moonlight is close - very close - to Lawrencetown Beach, a 2.5 mile long white sand beach just outside the city. Entries in Moonlight's guestbook describe it perfectly: "We have never spent a more amazing few days. Unbelievingly romantic and serene and will be in our thoughts whenever we need to be soothed", "Heaven on earth - the peace and privacy is more than we dreamed".

Oak Island Inn
Mystery and romance go together like a cloak and dagger. In Mahone Bay, near the site of the real Oak Island mystery, the Oak Island Inn offers Murder Mystery Weekends as well as "fireside retreats', 'winter blues' escapes and one weekend especially for Valentine's Day lovers. Every getaway weekend package presents a theme. If you prefer seclusion, a private oceanfront chalet awaits you.

River Valley Retreat
"Gie me love in her I court, Love to love maks a' the sport..." When Robbie Burns penned these words, he couldn't have imagined that 'New Scotland' on the other side of the Atlantic would have a wild bunch of kilted skiers careening down the slopes on his anniversary. Book a private chalet at the River Valley Retreat, and bring your kilt on January 26 to ski free at the Wentworth Valley's Robbie Burns Day.

Salmon River House
A room where the river spills into the ocean, a private cottage or a seaside retreat are all choices offered by Salmon River House, about 40 minutes from Halifax. The Salmon River House offers romantic getaway weekends starting in April, and in summer a picnic lunch for your canoe trip up the river, where you'll view soaring cliffs and waterfalls under the watchful eyes of a few ancient inukshuks.

Surfside Inn
Awaken your passions with an "All-Inclusive" Year Round Romance Getaway at the Surfside Inn. Chilled champagne, creamy truffles, and your own private whirlpool. Then, enjoy a cozy three course dinner by candlelight in front of the fireplace and a healthy morning breakfast, as low as $129.00

Trout Point Lodge
A brand new establishment in the heart of the Acadian forest is "restoring the tradition of the great lodges" in Nova Scotia. What's more, Trout Point offers a culinary getaway including gourmet meals prepared by French Master Chefs from New Orleans. Located on the Tusket River near Yarmouth and the Kejimkujik conservation area. Check for winter reservation availability.
