I recently purchased a home in the Abbecombec Ocean Village and was wondering if anyone out there could provide me with some information on the area. Wondering the origin of the name, especially any historical information on the Abbecombec Marshes. I would really appreciate any information I can get my hands on.

Thanks! Smile

Welcome to the Shore!

If you want to learn about the area where you purchased a home in this gated community you might want to consider talking to your new neighbours. I mean, go outside the gates and meet the local folks. They're friendly. A good place to start might be with the folks at Webber's Store and Memory Lane.

Once they get to know you a little, oldtimers are usually a good source of historical information.

I'm curious and hope you'll excuse me for asking a personal question: Are you a full time resident and where was 'home' before you came here?

Cheers,

Sel

Hello and thank you for replying to my message.

I am originally from St. John's, NL, however, I moved to Halifax just over 12 years ago. Sick of the city life, my fiance and I opted for a home in a more rural setting. As this area reminds me of NL so much, and the price was right, we decided that this would be a perfect first home where we can settle in and eventually have a family.

I have spoken to the folks at Webbers, and the kind ladies at Sobeys many, many times. I know the basics, but I would really like some more in depth historical info about the Abbecombec Marshes. I was told that originally the area was a man-made hatchery of some sort, but I really would like specifics. If you have any historical facts, or even local folklore, or even gossip, I would love to hear more!

Cheers,

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

Welcome again! What this Shore needs most is young people (I'm assuming now) who live here because they want to, and who appreciate what this beautiful region has to offer in terms of quality of life.

As far as the Abbecombec is concerned, I'm afraid I can't be of much help. We live a little more than an hour east of you in Moser River. A quick google search only turned up links to real estate and investment sites.

There is a book, however, that lists and tries to explain a lot of the Mig'ma place names. I'll have to ask my wife what the title is and where one might find it.

Have you tried the library at Musquodoboit Harbour?

Enjoy the sunshine on this great long week end!

Cheers,

Sel.
